Wayne Charmer

Wayne Charmer fell in love with the properties of kiln-fused glass when experimenting incorporating a variety of materials within the glass itself.
In the earlier stages of his career he was driven by the unpredictability of the medium. The technical nature of the material changes when fired at temperatures exceeding 800°c. It undergoes many different transformations from a solid to a liquid compound, which can affect the final outcome in many surprising ways. Over the past six years he has explored its many technical qualities and gained more control with the material to produce his unique handmade designs which include a range of coasters, bowls and bespoke lighting. Wayne uses float glass combined with various materials. Enamel is one of his favourite as the variety of effects it achieves emphasises his passion for colour. He recognises the power of colour and it¹s healing and stimulating properties and takes advantage of this within his work by mixing and combining different palettes. Inspiration for his work is drawn from his immediate environment and first impressions of places when travelling. This could be anything from manmade structures in urban environments to organic textures found more rurally. Colours, textures and forms are taken from this inspiration and combined the fluid and technical properties of glass.

Working with the material, rather than against it, he lets the designs evolve from one piece to another to produce a harmonious profusion of colours.
